MOUNTAINEERS, EDUCATORS

Scott Lehmann and Shayna Unger were both born into multigenerational deaf families and raised in the deaf community. Growing up, there wasn't much deaf representation in the outdoors, and they faced limited access to outdoor education due to communication barriers. It wasn’t until after college that they taught themselves to climb by studying YouTube videos and communicating with other mountaineers using paper and pen. Over the last ten years, they have climbed some of the world’s highest mountains, including Kilimanjaro, Aconcagua, Denali, Mont Blanc, and the Matterhorn. Most recently, Shayna became the first deaf woman and Scott the first deaf American to reach the summits of Mount Everest and Lhotse, which they did back to back in 26 hours. They launched the Seeing Beyond: Seven Summits project with the aim of becoming the first deaf individuals to climb the Seven Summits, improving accessibility to information and education, and inspiring their community to explore outdoors.
