Record-Breaking Swimmer

On September 2, 2013, at the age of 64, Diana Nyad became the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without the aid of a shark cage, swimming 110.86 miles in just under 53 hours. Her other remarkable open-water swimming achievements include a record-breaking swim around Manhattan. As a prominent sports journalist, Nyad has filed stories for The New York Times, NPR, and many other top outlets. Her 2015 memoir, Find a Way, has earned worldwide praise and was adapted into the 2023 Netflix film Nyad, starring Annette Bening as Nyad and Jodie Foster as her best friend and swimming coach Bonnie Stoll. Both received Academy Award nominations for their performances. Additionally, Nyad and Stoll have further collaborated with their nationwide walking initiative EverWalk, sparking America to become a nation of walkers.
